Building the Weather Station

Secure the rain gauge in an open space where it can collect rain without obstruction. Build or attach the anemometer and wind vane at the top of the structure to catch the wind accurately.
For a simple DIY rain gauge, cut the top off a plastic bottle and mark measurements on the side. Place it upright in the ground or on the base. The anemometer can be made from paper cups attached to a stick, spinning in the wind. The wind vane can be fashioned from a piece of cardboard and a stick, pointing towards the wind direction.
Using the Weather Station
Once assembled, encourage kids to observe and record weather data daily. They can note the temperature, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction. Comparing data over days or weeks helps them understand weather patterns and climate changes.
