Getting Started with Carcassonne: a Beginner’s Overview

Carcassonne is a popular tile-placement board game that offers strategic gameplay and a rich medieval theme. Designed for 2 to 5 players, it is suitable for beginners and experienced gamers alike. This overview will help new players understand the basics of how to get started with Carcassonne.

Understanding the Game Objective

The main goal in Carcassonne is to score the most points by building cities, roads, monasteries, and fields. Players take turns drawing and placing tiles to expand the landscape. As they do, they deploy their followers, called “meeples,” to claim features and earn points when these features are completed.

Setup and Starting the Game

To set up the game:

  • Place the starting tile face up in the center of the table.
  • Shuffle all the remaining tiles and place them in a draw pile.
  • Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding set of meeples.
  • Decide who goes first, then play proceeds clockwise.

Playing the Game

On your turn, you:

  • Draw a tile from the pile.
  • Place the tile adjacent to existing tiles, matching features like roads or city walls.
  • Optionally, place one of your meeples on a feature of the tile, such as a city, road, or monastery.

After all players have taken their turns, completed features are scored, and meeples are returned to their owners. The game continues until all tiles are placed, or no more moves are possible.

Scoring and Winning

Points are awarded for completed features:

  • City: 2 points per tile, with bonuses for shields.
  • Road: 1 point per tile.
  • Monastery: 1 point for the monastery tile and 1 point for each surrounding tile when completed.
  • Fields: at the end of the game, fields score points based on the number of completed cities they touch.

The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins. Strategies involve balancing expansion, claiming features, and blocking opponents.
