Creating a fabric art Christmas stocking is a fun and rewarding holiday craft. This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through the process of making your own unique stocking to hang on your fireplace or give as a handmade gift.
Materials Needed
- Fabric in desired colors and patterns
- Felt for decorative accents
- Stuffing or batting
- Embroidery floss or thread

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Start by cutting two pieces of fabric in the shape of a stocking. A typical size is about 16 inches long with a 7-inch opening. Use a paper pattern or draw your own template before cutting.
Step 2: Sew the Main Body
Place the two fabric pieces right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving the top open. Use a ¼-inch seam allowance. Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams flat.
Step 3: Add Decorative Elements
Decorate your stocking with felt accents, embroidery, or other embellishments. Sew or glue these onto the front of the stocking. Be creative with your designs!
Step 4: Create the Cuff
Cut a strip of fabric for the cuff, about 4 inches high and long enough to wrap around the top of the stocking. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and sew the short ends together. Turn right side out and press.
Fold the cuff in half lengthwise and attach it to the top of the stocking, folding the raw edges inward. Sew in place to secure.
Step 5: Add a Hanging Loop
Cut a small strip of fabric or ribbon, about 6 inches long. Fold it in half and sew the ends to the inside of the cuff at the back of the stocking. This creates a loop for hanging.
Step 6: Finish and Fill
